Brent Funderburk, Mississippi State University art professor, will give an illustrated lecture, “Walter Anderson: American Mid-Century Visionary Modernist” at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, MS on March 22, 2012.  The event will begin at 6 PM and is free for museum members and guests with admission.

He will also present “Every Little Soul Must Shine: Walter Anderson’s Art for Children” on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at The Mississippi Museum of Art, in Jackson, MS.  As a part of the “Still Curious? Lecture Series” sponsored by the Mississippi Arts Commission, the slide presentation will begin at 6 PM in the Trustmark Grand Hall.  According to Funderburk, Walter Inglis Anderson sought to transform culture through children. Anderson considered his children’s book designs, linoleum block prints for children’s rooms, and illustrations of classic fables and fairy tales as an alternative to the darker forces of the modern world (the atomic bomb, for example), in his own time and in ours.

Funderburk, a faculty member at MSU since 1982, curated the exhibition, “The Mystical Landscapes of Walter Anderson” which has toured museums in Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi since 2008.

“Wave” (“Reclamation”) was recently selected to become a part of the permanent collection of the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, MS.  The large watercolor work, completed in 2009, will be shown as a part of “The Mississippi Story” which is comprised of over 200 works by Mississippi artists.  The Mississippi Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the state.

Juror Dean Mitchell selected three paintings by Brent Funderburk for the 8th Biennial National Art Exhibition at the Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda, FL, which will show from February 4 through March 11, 2012.  With 500 entries from thirty-two states, 128 works were chosen.  Funderburk won the Third Prize and $750 for his Watercolor painting “Ascension.” Also selected were “Perfect Storm” and “When My Ship Comes In.”

Graphis, “The International Journal of Visual Communication” will feature two paintings by Brent Funderburk for its Design Annual 2012.  His watercolor paintings “Today” and “Goodbye Red” were selected as winners in the category of Single Illustration representing Mississippi State University.  These will be featured in the publication as well as online.

Brent Funderburk will exhibit at Shain Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina, in November, presenting recent works in a two person show (with William Jameson) from November 9 to November 30, 2010.

Shain Gallery was voted Charlotte’s “Best Gallery” in 2009′s “The Best of the Best” in Charlotte Magazine.

A reception for the artists will be held on Friday, November 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Artists will be present and the public is invited. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00AM to 5:00 PM.

Brent Funderburk has won multiple awards and has artworks published in two recent national, juried publications.

His paintings, “Flying World”, Today”, and “Goodbye, Red” were selected by juror Dina Deitsch as Professional Fine Art Award winners presented in “Creative Quarterly: The Journal of Art and Design” (Issue #19). Deitsch, who is Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, also selected Funderburk’s “Rise and Fall” As a “Professional Fine Art Runner up” featured on Creative Quarterly’s Online Gallery with the award winners. Of nearly five hundred entries, Funderburk was one of nine professional fine artists selected, and one of three with more than one award. CQ is distributed in the US, Canada, and the UK.

Funderburk’s “One Over Abiquiu” was also selected by juror Adia Millet, noted artist and Whitney Museum Fellow, as one of ten Professional Fine Art Award winners in Issue #17 of Creative Quarterly, published earlier this year.

Artworks by Funderburk were also selected for the juried national competition resulting in publication in the current issue of “Studio Visit Magazine” (Volume 10). NovemberBrent Funderburk’s first limited edition, giclée print, “November”, will premiere on June 7, 2010 in parallel with his one-person showings the 2010 USA International Ballet Competition and at Bryant Galleries in Jackson, Mississippi.

“November”, a watercolor/acrylic painting created in 2009/’10, has been printed in an artist-signed, numbered, limited, and closed, giclée (“zhee-clay”) edition of 100, beginning June 7. Each image represents the highest possible resolution of state-of-the-art color pigment printing, as authorized by the artist. Each image is printed on an archival, heavy, fine art paper.
“November” is 22″ X 28 1/2″ (horizontal) within a deckled image with a 3 inch white margin.
The image presents luminous redbud leaves in low light on a cool but radiant  Autumn day.

This hand signed, giclée print edition will close at #100- each print is $400, which includes shipping and handling, and will be mailed (U. S. Postal Service/insured) to arrive within two weeks of the order.

Brent Funderburk, artist and professor at Mississippi State University, will be featured in two one-person shows in Jackson, Mississippi during the months of June and July, 2010.

As Official Artist of the 2010 USA International Ballet Competition, Funderburk will show a retrospective of his paintings in the exhibition “The Art of Brent Funderburk”, from June 12 to 27 at the USA IBC Ceremonies at Thalia Mara Hall in downtown Jackson Mississippi. Work will be exhibited daily and will be for sale, along with the painting “Firebird 2010″ which is shown on the USA IBC poster and programs.
